Twitter Spaces Makes Historic Leap Forward For New Media.

An Editorial from Geno Giovanni 5.25.23

Great night for new media, as Twitter Spaces got half a million listeners at once logging onto hear Governor Ron DeSantis's announcement of his candidacy as President of The United States of America.

Elon Musk and David Sacks (co-founder of Pay Pal & co-host of The All-In Podcast) hosted the Space. This new media will rival the legacy media (ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN).

This article will not comment on Governor DeSantis's views or biases for or against the Florida governor. And no, concentration on the server crashing at the beginning of the talk, delaying the program by roughly 20 minutes. I know the elites in the dying but still powerful legacy media have done.

Here The Talk

Ron DeSantis Launches His Presidential Bid With Elon Musk On Twitter Spaces | USA Elections NewsDeSantis made his announcement in a video ahead of joining Twitter CEO Elon Musk on the platform. The broadcast of the interview, which had been intended to be the formal launch for the DeSantis campaign, at times lost sound and some users were either unable to join or were dropped. It was an inauspicious start for a campaign predicated on the governor's executive competence.

CNN-News18

I'll be brief. The over 20-minute show was a step in the right direction in broadcasting and receiving news, how it was conducted, and a rejection of the legacy media.

In a previous article DeSantis Set to Announce Presidential Bid on Twitter: The Power and Pitfalls of Social Media Campaigning, announcing a to for President on social media isn't new.

As far back as 2008, with then-Senator Barak Obama and in 2016, with then-candidate Donald Trump and his unfiltered posts. Presidential candidates [are continuing to utilize] social media platforms to market their run for The White House and talk directly [with no filter] to the American people.

And no one has pointed out [while listening to Spaces] I felt like we were all listening to AM radio from yesteryear. I mean [in 2023], "video" would dominate the spaces, you would think. However, Twitter wants its users to utilize audio instead.

I'm not knocking the action, just a little taken back and perhaps thankful to be using my ears and not my sight.

This also gave a Republican candidate a chance to speak with no filter and no bias against him. Something the legacy media has done its fair share for decades to Republicans. It was Rush Limbaugh who shined a light on the matter in America back in the early 1990s.

The broadcast fluctuated between 250K to 500K plus; at first [according to the live count and from David Sacks]. Twitter's server crashed, which caused everyone to be logged off the stream automatically. But, after a few reboots and switching from Musk's account to Sack's, the broadcast went well without a hitch.

According to the Sacks Twitter Spaces Account, over 2.2 million tuned into the broadcast throughout the evening. It was an uptick from Musk's account (1.4 million) tuned in however crashed, a few times.

I decided to jump off Musk's account and let others listen. And right away, I found another Twitter Space of people tuning in and talking but also simulcasting DeSantis.

The hosts did not show favoritism, by the way. They were on the neutral ground [just wanting] to listen to DeSantis's announcement, facilitate discussion and promote their "new media."

My only grip was the question and answer segment from the listeners. They were known as talking heads, like conservative commentator Dana Loesch. The questions were more to generate a response from Governor DeSantis, who agreed with everyone in the Q&A. Which made the segment seem like it was rehearsed, in my opinion.

Let us look to the positives and focus on the facts.

  1. Governor Ron DeSantis was given an unfiltered platform to speak

  2. No biases for or against were uttered by the hosts

  3. Legacy media lost out on 2.3 million listeners

I don't think this will be the last from Twitter. Tucker Carlson will be taking his show to the platform soon. And I don't think they will stop there.
